“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
Let’s dive headfirst into the wild world of Genesis.
Hold on tight because this shit’s about to get real…
Back in the day, people had some seriously wild ideas about how the universe came to be. The Greeks, for instance, thought it was a sort of chaotic playground for a bunch of squabbling gods, who essentially created us so they could screw with one another. Creation stories from ancient cultures ranged from a pile of romantic crap about the sun and moon becoming celestial fuck-buddies and popping out earthlings, to straight-up brutal tales of humans gushing out of the blood of a dead god or even bursting from the belly of a goddamn sea monster. It was all about things coming from other things coming from other things… and so on.
But the creation account in Genesis drops a massive a-bomb on the scene. As we crack open that ancient book, those first few words hit us like a ginormous cosmic explosion: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” BOOM! It all starts with God flexing His creative muscles and bringing everything into existence… out of nothing!
Now, fast forward to this poetic prophet named Isaiah, who apparently gets a direct download from the Big Man Himself. God says: “I’m the Lord who made all this, who stretched out the heavens, and spread out the earth all by myself.” (Isaiah 44:24)
God tells us that He created everything, and nobody and nothing was there with him. That means no aliens, no animals, no atoms, nothing, zilch, nada… just God. Well, that’s precisely what Genesis seems to be getting at!
Some scientists even suggest that Genesis 1:1 is like the grand opening of the entire cosmic show, the birth of the whole spacetime continuum. We’re talking about the origin of time, space, and matter all in one divine breath:
“In the beginning…” (time)
“God created the heavens…” (space)
“…and the earth…” (matter)
Mind-blowing, right? Well… at least it’s an interesting concept.
Whatever you choose to believe about that, Genesis and the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures do insist that the God of the Bible existed long before anything else… including time. Think about that for one moment… If God exists outside of time, then there’s nothing that’s too hard for Him. All those mind-boggling miracles you find in the Scriptures? Child’s play for the One who spoke the whole universe into existence out of nothing. From epic floods to parting sea waters, whales swallowing prophets, magic bread raining down from clouds, supernatural healings and deliverances, and even conquering death itself, God’s got it all under control.
So, if you can wrap your head around those first four words of Genesis 1, “In the beginning, God…” then buckle the fuck up because you’re in for the wildest ride of your life. Nothing is too big or too small for Him. He’s the ultimate Master of the universe, and with Him on your side, the possibilities are limitless!
Now, some people might be skeptical about all this. They’ll be like, “Come on, Ted! Are you seriously telling me that you think everything we can see, sense, and feel came from jack shit? That God just opened His mouth and suddenly, bam! Universe!” Um, yes, that’s where faith kicks in. It’s believing in possibilities you can’t see or fully wrap your head around. And let me tell you, when you take that leap of faith, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities that Princess Jasmine could only dream about.
For Instance, if God can create the entire cosmos out of fuck-all, then there’s nothing He can’t do. Right? Nothing. He’s not bound by time or restricted by space. He’s way beyond all of that! And know what? He’s got the roadmap of your entire life laid out right in front of Him.
In Psalm 139, an ancient king named David straight-up says that God sees our whole story spread out, chapter after chapter, like an open book!1 He knows the beginning, the middle, and the end. Imagine that’s true for a second… If that is true then why the hell do we keep stressing out and losing our shit over tomorrow?
To the degree that we could accept that truth and begin to live like it’s actually reality, we’d be completely free. from anxiety. Worry. Future tripping. The prospect of a meaningless life. Free!
Here’s the deal, and you need to try to wrap your mind around this. I know it’ll be hard for you. Even harder for some of you than others. But here it is: God isn’t losing an ounce of sleep over your future. So why should you? He’s got it all under control. He’s got the master plan. And guess what? He’s invited you to be a part of it. So instead of worrying about what lies ahead, why not put your trust in the Big Boss who’s got it all handled? Why not try to figure out what His plan is for you?
Now, I’m not saying life’s gonna be a walk in the park. We all face some serious stuff — trials, challenges, and moments that’ll knock us flat on our asses. Life can be up one minute and down the next. But in those moments, remember this: God claims to have a purpose for your life. He says that He’s working all that other shit out, step by step for your ultimate good (read Romans 8:28). If that’s true then you can actually let go of the worry, and for once in your life embrace some freaking adventure. I mean, if you’re really in the hands of the Creator, the one who belted the universe into existence with His Word… if He can handle that, well, I’m pretty sure He can handle whatever the hell comes your way. He says that He can. The question is whether you can believe Him.
But wait, there’s more!
It’s not just about your tomorrow.
It’s about all your yesterdays too!
God has not only already seen everything you ever will do. He’s also seen you screw up every thing you’ve ever screwed up in your whole fucking life. He knows all your mistakes, all your epic failures, and yet, for some reason… He still chose you. He set His love on you and went as far as sacrificing Himself for you. Can you actually believe that? That’s what all the Jesus stories continually say.
“You were part of His master plan right from the start.”
In the book of Revelation, Jesus is called “the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” What that means is that it was all part of His divine plan even before He got down to creating this crazy world. When he created you… He knew that He’d have to sacrifice more than you could imagine if He was going to give you a life worth living. And He did! Again the only question is whether you can let yourself believe it.
If so, here’s what that means for you in the daily…
Have you ever felt like God’s just sitting around, biting His nails, hoping and praying that you won’t mess things up? Well, let me drop some good news knowledge on you. The poets and the prophets of the scriptures are all trying to tell us that God is not bound by time like us mere mortals. He’s not anxiously watching and wishing for the best. He’s already taken care of your fuck-ups. Your tab has been paid in full, and you’re completely forgiven! Your job is to just accept it. Repentance isn’t about trying to earn the forgiveness and restoration that you don’t have; it’s about living from the forgiveness and restoration that you already do have! It’s about embracing the truth that sets you free and letting it transform your mind, heart, and life.
And let me tell you, this isn’t just any old good news, like some trendy topic from yesterdays twitter feed. This eternal truth has been woven into the very fabric of time itself. Genesis is where the whole thing started. It’s the seed of God’s grand plan to create everything out of nothing. And when you truly grasp the power and sovereignty of God’s creation, you’ll be liberated from all sorts of goddam baggage. No more being stuck in your worst moments, no more finding your identity in all the fucked-up things that have been done to you, or in all things that you’ve done that you wish you could forget. You’ll start seeing God for the loving Creator He is, instead of some small-minded pencil-pushing accountant, keeping tabs on your good days and bad days. And the best part? You’ll be free from losing your shit over every little thing that comes your way!
The possibilities are endless if you can just stretch yourself to believe the first four words of Scripture. If you can take a giant leap of faith to believe the hardest thing, then all the other stuff becomes much, much easier.
Now, listen up, folks. Because I’m going to say this again, and when writers repeat themselves its either because they are delusional or because they have something fucking important that they are trying to drive home. I’m probably pretty delusional… but this is also pretty goddam important… so here comes the broken record. Ready?
“I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. life isn’t always gonna be a walk in the park. We’ll come face-to-face with some serious shit! trials, challenges, and moments that’ll knock us flat on our asses.”
Life can be a goddamn rollercoaster ride, with unexpected ups and downs that’ll make you wanna hurl. But in those moments, hold on tight and remember this: God’s got a purpose for you, and He’s working it all out, one step at a time. So let go of the worry, embrace the adventure, and trust that you’re in the hands of the Creator Himself—the One who joyfully shouted the whole universe into existence. And if He can handle that, well, trust me, He can handle whatever the hell comes your way.
A little Jewish guy named Paul who lived over 2,000 years ago, lays out the whole mind-blowing truth for us, in his ancient letter to the Colossians. He’s says:
“We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels— everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment…From beginning to end he’s there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so expansive, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. (Colossians 1:15-18)
See that? Paul says everything was created through Christ and for Christ. And you know what? In Him, everything holds together! That’s some profound stuff right there!
Here’s why it’s profound. When you truly grasp this mind-blowing reality, you’ll finally be as free as a bird. Free to stand in absolute awe and wonder of God’s crazy intense power and overwhelming sovereignty. Free to appreciate the mind-boggling beauty and mind-bending complexity of creation. But here’s the real kicker—you’ll be as heck from all that unnecessary worry and anxiety that’s been weighing you down. Can I get an amen?
And that’s just the beginning! Because as soon as you actually start to wrap your life around this truth, your heart will actually begin to overflow with an abundance of gratitude and praise. You’ll begin to feel alive in a way you never have before. Your love and appreciation for the Big Guy will begin to grow like a motherfucker!
Let me tell you, this realization is a complete life-changer! It’ll transform the way you see yourself, the world, and even the Almighty Himself. So just pause… breathe… take a moment right now. Reflect on God’s creation and His sovereignty. Let it wash over you like a tidal wave of awe and wonder. ‘Cause once you get a taste of the unimaginable depth of His love and forgiveness, you’ll never be the same again.
